Big Horn County Search and Rescue responded to four separate missions over the weekend, assisting overdue hikers on Cloud Peak and a stranded boater in Bighorn Canyon.
According to the organization, the first mission began Friday after an overdue hiker was reported near the summit of Cloud Peak. A search team was deployed, but the mission was called off shortly after 1 a.m. when the hiker safely returned to camp.
While volunteers were attending the organization’s fundraising event Saturday evening, crews were dispatched again after a boater requested assistance approximately 18 miles north of Barry Landing in Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area. Search and Rescue members launched their jet boat and met the boater after the vessel regained partial power. The disabled boat was then towed safely back to Barry Landing.
Sunday brought two additional missions involving overdue hikers on Cloud Peak. During the first, a ground team responded from the West Tensleep Trailhead, located the hikers and escorted them safely back to the trailhead.
Later that evening, another overdue hiker was reported on Cloud Peak. Before rescuers deployed, officials confirmed the individual had safely made it off the mountain.
The organization noted that the busy weekend highlighted the ongoing demand placed on its volunteer members and emphasized that community support through fundraising events helps provide the equipment and resources needed to respond to emergencies throughout the region.
