The Cody Police Department is addressing questions circulating on social media about a camera located along Yellowstone Avenue, emphasizing that the device is privately owned and not connected to the city or law enforcement.
In a press release, the department said the camera is installed on private property and is not owned, operated or monitored by the City of Cody or the Cody Police Department. Officials also said the department does not have direct access to any information or data collected by the camera.
According to the department, there are currently no City of Cody ordinances or Wyoming state laws that prohibit a private business from installing and operating cameras or collecting data for legitimate business purposes on its own property.
The department also addressed speculation that the camera is an automated license plate reader (ALPR), stating that neither the Cody Police Department nor the City of Cody has plans to purchase, install or use ALPR technology within the city.
Officials also responded to online comments suggesting the camera should be vandalized or damaged. The department warned that intentionally damaging private property could result in city ordinance violations, criminal charges under Wyoming law and civil liability.
Police said any reports of vandalism or property destruction involving the camera, or any other private property, will be thoroughly investigated, and officers will pursue applicable criminal charges and ordinance violations where appropriate.
