An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect from noon Saturday through 9 p.m. Monday as dangerously hot temperatures settle across much of Wyoming, including portions of the Bighorn Basin.
According to the National Weather Service, daytime highs are expected to reach 100 to 110 degrees below 6,000 feet and 90 to 100 degrees between 6,000 and 7,500 feet. The warning includes portions of central, north central, northwest, south central, southwest and west central Wyoming.
Officials warn that prolonged exposure to the heat can significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses. Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water, limit time outdoors during the hottest part of the day, stay in air-conditioned buildings when possible, and check on elderly relatives, neighbors and others who may be more vulnerable to extreme temperatures.
The Park County Sheriff’s Office is also urging residents to use extra caution with any activity that could spark a wildfire. While Stage 1 fire restrictions are already in effect, officials are asking the public to avoid agricultural burning as triple-digit temperatures combined with wind gusts of 20 to 30 mph create dangerous fire conditions for both the public and first responders.
Anyone working or recreating outdoors this weekend is encouraged to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks and be aware of the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
